Dry Shampoo for Dogs - Easier than you think!

Posted by CYNTHIA JENSEN on

Most dog owners know that we shouldn't bathe our furry family members more than once a week at the absolute most, or we risk severely drying out their skin causing itchy patches and limp fur.  Most will go weeks, if not months between baths.  But what can we do when our furry friends become... let's say overly odorous, or have extremely oily fur?  Why, dry shampoo of course!

While making organic shampoos and soaps yourself can be time consuming, messy and ultimately more expensive than simply purchasing something at the store, sometimes you just want to make things for your pets yourself - either because you have the time, or just to be sure that you control the ingredients that you are bringing near your beloved pets.  This simple, yet effective recipe for Dry Shampoo for Dogs doesn't take long, you just need to have the right ingredients.

Dry Shampoo Corn Starch Baking Soda Essential Oils

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup pure Soda Bicarbonate (baking soda with no additives: Bob's Red Mill makes a good one!)
  • 3/4 cup organic Corn Starch
  • 24 drops essential oil (scent of your choice)

How to

  • Whisk the baking soda and corn starch together until well blended
  • Add in the drops of essential oil and mix until the fragrance is saturated completely through the power.  Make sure there are no globs of oil, but that they are all blended in.
  • Pour the mixture into a shaker bottle, and deoderize away!

All you need to do with the mixture is shake it on their fur and rub it in.  If you happen to shake on too much, you can brush out any extra, but that rarely happens.  Just be sure to keep it away from their eyes, ears and noses as any powder there can be irritating.
